YOUR SIDE, MY SIDE, AND THE TRUTH:
a play about the things we never talk about
One morning in the summer of 2003, Rebecca Auerbach received word that her recent boyfriend had died of a drug overdose. It is never a good time to receive such news; particularly when you’re high on drugs and have been all night, as she was at the time.
The memory of that morning haunted her for years. She knew that her life had led up to and away from that moment but she didn’t know what to do with that haunting memory. A couple of years ago while in New York, she wrote down her experience in vivid detail and shared it with a writing class. That was the start of the journey that led to the creation of what was to become Your Side, My Side, and the Truth, which premieres this August as part of the SummerWorks Festival.
The core of Your Side, My Side, and the Truth is based on the true events of Auerbach’s life but the narrative and characters are created, providing her with an opportunity to explore powerful questions—ones that are not often asked enough—about how our culture responds to death and what we believe is acceptable.
Your Side, My Side, and the Truth is about the things that we do as individuals that fly under the radar, that are often left unsaid. In looking at the intersecting lives of five young people, the piece will bring the raw language and experience of today onto the stage, including sex and drugs. It is an unsentimental, funny, and raunchy examination of five young people dealing with adversity, taboo and transgression. It tells a story with no moral conclusion. Rather it is about how we try to find pieces of ourselves in others.
